Tooth Erosion

What is Tooth Erosion ?
Tooth Erosion is the loss of tooth enamel caused by dietary or other acids in the mouth. Most people are aware that sugar can lead to cavities ( dental decay ) and inadequate oral hygiene can lead to bleeding gums ( gingivitis ) but it is less well known that your teeth can slowly dissolve away if you are not careful about what you drink.

What drinks are dangerous ?

Any drink with a pH of 5.5 or lower will dissolve your enamel.
Unfortunately a lot of everyday drinks fall into this category.
See the table link below for a range of drinks which we have tested ourselves.

How can I reduce erosion ?

  • Reduce your consumption of acid drinks
  • Drink water after you do have an acid drink
  • Use a straw for fizzy drinks to reduce exposure to your teeth
  • Give your enamel 30 minutes to recover after an acid drink before you brush
Here are some other causes of tooth erosion :
  • Stomach acid regurgitation from indigestion
  • Bullaemia
  • Breathing acid fumes at work
  • Eating large quantities of citrus fruits
What are the symptoms of tooth erosion ?
  • Teeth become increasingly sensitive to cold
  • Saucer shaped worn areas next to the gum margin
  • Teeth look thinner and smaller
