Edward gained his B.D.S. degree in 1975 at University College Dublin and the Dublin Dental Hospital with distinctions in Oral Medicine and Restorative Dentistry. He joined a practice in Hitchin, Hertfordshire where he gained experience in general practice before taking over the practice in De Parys Avenue in December 1979. From 1990 to 1992, he completed a two year part-time course in orthodontics for general practitioners with the British Postgraduate Medical Federation. He became a diplomate of the Faculty of General Dental Practice of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1995. He was a lecturer at Bedford College on the Dental Nurse course from 1983 to 1995 and an examiner for the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses from 1987 to 1999. From 1997 to 2004, he was been a member of the interviewing selection panel for appointing Vocational Training Practices in the East Anglian region.
