What is Dental Decay ?Dental Decay ( also known as Dental Caries ) is a disease where tooth substance is destroyed. It literally 'rots' away. It is one of the most common diseases in the world. Dental Decay in front teeth can be very disfiguring. Photograph © E.Byrne BDS DGDP (UK) |
Will I know if I have decay ?Some decay is obvious. However it can also penetrate teeth very quietly without you knowing. In molar teeth especially, decay can be difficult to spot and can penetrate quite deeply. By the time it is discovered, the tooth can be seriously weakened. Dentists usually take x-rays called "bitewings" every 2 to 3 years to check on molar teeth. Photograph © E.Byrne BDS DGDP (UK) |
Do Decayed teeth hurt ?
Teeth with decay do become more sensitive to cold. However, by the time you get toothache, the decay is usually close to the nerve chamber in the middle of the tooth. In order to save the tooth, it is often necessary to remove the nerve and complete a root canal treatment. It is far better to find decay in the early stages !
